Vegetarian

Back in September of 2016 I decided to be a vegetarian. Ever since then there has been some judgement and lots of questions which is totally OK. So I am here to explain and answer everything.

First and foremost, I’ve been wanting to be a vegetarian since I was 12 years old. I still remember the day I told my parents and their reaction wasn’t what I expected. They kind of just laughed it off. See, I live in a Mexican household which means there’s plenty of tacos, tamales, menudo, etc.. ALL the time. And to make things worse for my case, these were my favorite foods so I don’t blame my parents for not taking me seriously.

Well, 12 year old Claudia lasted about 2 days being a vegetarian before my mom made steak for dinner. I was weak and juvenile, ok, don’t judge me.

Ever since then I’ve been back and forth with this whole vegetarian thing. I’ve always wanted too but never had enough strength and discipline to actually stick with it. Also vegetables weren’t really my favorite, like at all, so it didn’t make sense but then again, I don’t make sense more than 99% of the time.

so…. why?

Fair question. I love animals. LOVE. And it hurts that they have to go through so much pain just so they can provide food for us. Or any products really. I know everyone is like, “well this is what we’ve been doing since the beginning of time!!!! ETC ETC” I get it. Like I said, I’ve been back and forth with this vegetarian thing for a while now. But just about 5 months ago I realized that my love for animals was way bigger than my love for eating foods that contained meat. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been easy. The first month was by far the worst. I was always hungry and always thinking about chicken wings. But it’s really all about discipline and it eventually gets easier.

I also made some other changes in my life like I buy cruelty-free makeup. I do not go to zoo’s and aquariums anymore. And I have even donated money to Vegan Outreach and Best Friends Animal Society by purchasing their Pura Vida Bracelets. (I wear them all the time)

So yes, actions speak louder than words. And if I really love animals then I have to SHOW it not just talk about it.

what do you eat at home? or when you go out?

Thanks to my wonderful and amazing parents I am still able to eat a lot at home. They have been very kind with my decision and make more vegetarian food. I may say though, it is an inconvenience sometimes for them (although they won’t admit it) I know how much they love beef, chicken, pork, etc.. but they still make it work. I couldn’t do it without their support and for that I am thankful.

When I go out to eat with friends or whatever, I usually let them pick where to go. I’m not very picky anymore and almost every place out there has some sort of vegetarian menu or dish. If all else fails, I just get a salad and I am ok. The places with the best vegetarian foods are:

  • Chipotle – THAT veggie bowl though.
  • Qdoba – also THAT veggie bowl though.
  • Bdubs – their vegetarian pizza thing is amazing.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been to that many restaurants since September so I will slowly be updating the list. Sorry!!

oh are you like one of those people that are constantly preaching about animals and making people feel bad?

No I am not. I am not here to judge anyone with anything they do. I know and understand that not everyone is vegetarian and not everyone wants to be. Although animal abuse is a very important topic, I hate to be one of those people that are constantly preaching. I am not that person and never will be. All I ask is for people to respect my choice and all will be good.

So yes, I’m all about animals. I love them and they deserve the best. Being a vegetarian has been quite the experience even though I’m only 5 months in. I hope to make it to a full year and then slowly start my transition to vegan. I will keep you updated!

as always, thanks for reading!

love,

claudia

  1. You, Will be Vegetarian forever I Am sure.Because the reason you have i.e. Animal Love, Will never give you an instinct to eat them.
I can very much relate to your post, Being Vegetarian from so many years, i would say around 10 it have now. This is the only reason I Am also Vegetarian, this love for animal and cruelity to them makes you more firm towards your decision to be vegetarian. If you always keep in mind that Animal do have soul & they too have right to live,You will never Eat them.
